Health Literacy Workshop

November 6, 2006

Internationally known health literacy expert Helen Osborne spoke on October 13, 2006 to a targeted audience of nurses, nursing assistants, human services workers, EMTs and home care workers.  According to the Department of Health and Human Services, over 93 million Americans have some difficulty understanding basic health care messages, such as dosage charts for medications.  Such lack of understanding can lead to a variety of adverse health outcomes, some of which are potentially severe.  To attempt to address this issue in our area, a group of Rural Health Networks including S2AY, the Steuben Rural Health Network, the Chemung Valley Rural Health Network, the Allegany-Western Steuben Rural Health Network and Southern Tier Health joined together to bring Helen Osborne to the region for this presentation.  The workshop was approved by STREMAC for credit for EMS personnel, and certificates of completion were offered to all others for documentation of continuing education.
